Chapter 6

December 20.

Gryf added another measure of powdered sugar to the bowl on the counter in front of him. The planning for the Christmas festivities seemed to be going well, especially now that the necessary ingredients scavenged from Camp One’s stores and other places had arrived. It was not an overwhelming amount, but with mindful diligence there should be enough to go around. He must remember to personally thank Simone, Duck, and Maria for their outstanding efforts. Particularly Maria, who had promised to investigate comparable Matiran ingredients for next year’s celebration.

And there would be a celebration next year. Foremost for the sake of his family, but also because the scents of Christmas—powdered sugar, cinnamon, peppermint, ginger—appealed to him.

He lifted the bowl, tucked it into the crook of his arm, and applied rapid whisk-strokes to the white confection called icing. The Atlantis’s food prep galley was not a place he had spent much time in before, but now he and several of his off-duty crew had taken up different stations to learn new skills under the tutelage of Senior Nutrition Chief Clio Culin.

Perhaps there would be a benefit if such lessons become a standard part of training for all command-rank officers.

A whiff of char wafted into his nose. Some might need such training more than others.

“Sweet Mother, this cannot be right.”

Gryf paused stirring and turned his gaze on Ora. She stood before the oven along the far wall, glaring at the contents of the flat-pan in her hands. The stiff set of her shoulders and wrinkled-nose expression were her traditional indicators of a failed project. And Ora despised personal failure. He set the bowl on the counter and crossed the pleasantly-padded floor of the food prep area to peer over his cousin’s shoulder.

Wisps of smoke curled up from the little body-shaped black lumps that lay on the pan. “These do not look at all like the images of gingerbread men Alexandra shared with me. They have cooked too long.”

“Truly, you have a gift for stating the obvious, Senior Captain.” Ora’s dry tone did not escape his notice.

Even so, acknowledging her sarcasm would aggravate her more. “What went wrong?”

“I do not know.” The way she forced each word out through her clenched teeth emphasized her escalating anxiety.

Chief Culin abruptly appeared on the other side of Ora. Gryf startled. Ska. With the cushioned flooring in here, that woman could sneak up on anyone. She was like the Graig Roble of the food prep galley.

Clio Culin sniffed. “Did you make the adjustment for space cooking?”

Ora wrinkled her nose. “I did not.”

Gryf gave her a grin. “I am not sure you understand the definition of the word ‘obvious’, sobin.”

She frowned and raised her chin, low-grade defiance shown in her golden eyes. “You know that I have never enjoyed cooking, Gryf. Not having to cook is half the reason why I joined the Guardian Fleet.”

“I—”

Culin waved her hand in the direction of the ruined Terrian treats. “Nothing can be done to save this batch. Put the flat-pan in the cleanser, Captain Solaris.
